In a world that increasingly encourages isolation and digital connections, the call to gather together as a Christian community becomes ever more vital. We need to uphold the importance of gathering, not only as a tradition but as a spiritual necessity that fosters faith, strength, and unity.
The Bible is full of passages about the importance of gathering together. Hebrews 10:24-25 says, "And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near." This passage shows us that communal worship and fellowship are integral to our spiritual growth and encouragement.
In gathering, we also partake in the means of grace—Word and Sacrament. The Bible teaches that through these means, God offers, gives, and seals the forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation. Regular participation in the Divine Service, Bible studies, and other communal activities strengthens our faith and keeps us grounded in our beliefs.
Our spiritual journey is not meant to be traveled alone. The Christian community serves as a source of mutual support, where we can share our burdens, celebrate our joys, and grow together in our faith. As Proverbs 27:17 says, "Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another." This sharpening happens best within the context of regular, intentional gatherings.
When we gather as a community, we also bear witness to the world around us. Our unity, love, and mutual support serve as a testimony to the power of the Gospel. Jesus prayed for all believers in John 17:21, “that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.”
Finally, gathering together is an act of obedience. God commands us to gather, to worship, and to build each other up. In doing so, we honor Him and live out our calling as His disciples. This obedience is not seen as a burdensome duty but as a joyful response to the grace we have received through Christ.
Let us embrace the beauty and importance of gathering together as Christians. In our times of communal worship, study, and fellowship, we find strength, encouragement, and the opportunity to live out our faith more fully. As we continue to face the challenges of an ever-changing world, my prayer is that our gatherings remain a reminder of our unity in Christ and our shared mission to make His love known to all. Let's come together, not just as members of a church, but as a family bound by faith, hope, and love.
In Christ's Service,
Aaron Finkel, DCE
